Community Spotlight | Delta, OH

By Jordyn Windnagle - February 23, 2024

Nestled in Fulton County, roughly 30 miles west of Toledo, lies the friendly midwestern town of Delta, Ohio. If you’re looking for rural tranquility and a strong sense of community, look no further than this peaceful village.

With a population of less than 4,000, Delta may seem like an unassuming, sleepy town, but it has a rich history and a strong influence on the region’s economic growth. According to the Wauseon Republic, Delta is widely considered to be the oldest village in Fulton County. James McQuillin, the first settler in what would later become Delta, took up residence in 1834.

The town has strong agricultural roots that are proudly carried on today by local farmers. NatureFresh Farms operates year-round on 45 acres utilizing sustainable methods. Other locally-owned farms in the area include Kiel Farms, Layton’s Produce, Warncke Berry Farm, Kirkum Farm, Freedom Farm, Hoens Orchard & Farm, and Beroske Farms & Greenhouse.

The Delta Chicken Festival is an annual celebration of the city’s history in poultry. The festival began in the 1950s when Delta was home to one of the largest chicken hatcheries in the area and several chicken finishing farms. The event sells an estimated 3,800 chicken halves and raises approximately $10,000 per year for Delta Parks and Recreation.

Another prominent industry in Delta is manufacturing. The town is home to North Star BlueScope, a steel distributor that plays a significant role in the automotive industry, as well as agriculture and construction. The facility underwent a $700 million expansion in 2022. According to the company’s LinkedIn, they produce over 2 million tons of coiled steel per year and employ 385 team members.

Laying claim as a major manufacturing hub is certainly a perk to the local economy, but it’s the small businesses that make Delta stand out. Whether you're a long-time resident or a newcomer, you’ll be met with genuine connections at these welcoming establishments.

For a more leisurely outdoor activity, visitors can enjoy Mother Nature at Delta Municipal Park, the Delta Reservoirs, and the Maumee State Forest, which is just outside of Delta in Swanton, Ohio.

Delta's strategic location adds to its appeal. Situated within reasonable proximity to major cities, residents enjoy the benefits of both small-town living and easy access to urban amenities. This balance makes Delta an attractive option for those seeking a peaceful lifestyle without sacrificing convenience.
